How to make paper(紙をつくろう!)

Today in the “How to” series, we will talk about paper made from the taro root.

Do you know papyrus paper? In ancient Egypt they made paper from the papyrus plant.

Even today, paper is a necessity in our lives. Without paper, we couldn’t draw or write anything.

I performed an experiment making paper when I was in the 1st grade of elementary school. Today I’d like to tell you about it.

To prepare: dry taro root, mallet, cloth

Step 1 Cover the taro root in water and soak it until it expands.

Step 2 Arrange a layer of taro root horizontally in a metal tray.

Step 3 Arrange the next layer vertically in the metal tray. The result is a lattice pattern.

Step 4 Cover the taro root with the cloth.

Step 5 Pound the taro root with the mallet. The taro root should become one thin layer.

Step 6 Air dry the covered taro root. When it’s dry it can be used as paper!

Today I told you how to make paper from taro root, but you can make it from sugar cane and radishes, too. I conducted that experiments as well.

When you make paper from sugar cane or radishes, you have to use some chemicals, so it is more difficult than today’s experiment. I will tell you about that another time!

Making tofu(豆腐をつくる)

Today in the “How To” series, we will talk about tofu.

Do you know tofu? Tofu is made from soybeans.

It is known for a high protein content and is good for the health.

I performed an experiment to making tofu when I was in the 2nd grade of elementary school. Today I’d like to tell you about it.

To prepare: pestle and mortar, 200g of soybeans, a paper cup, coagulant, large pot,

cloth, paper coffee filter

Step 1 Before starting the experiment, you should soak the soybeans in the water for about

8 hours. Soybeans will swell in the water.

Step 2 Make several holes in the paper cup. Put the coffee filter in the paper cup.

Step 3 Mash soybeans with pestle and mortar.

Step 4 boil water in the large pot. When the water is boiling put the soybeans in the pot. Heat the soybeans over law heat for 2 or 3 minutes and then turn off the heat.

Step 5 Use the strainer to remove the soybeans.

Step 6 Strain the liquid using the cloth. We can get soy milk.

Step 7 Put coagulant in the soy milk and mix.

Step 8 Put the soymilk mixture into a cup.

Step 9 Put the lid on the cup. The liquid will drain from the holes in the cup.

When the liquid finishes draining, you have tofu! Tofu should be refrigerated.

I was surprised that water makes soybeans swell and that protein solidifies using a coagulant!

Making Original Candle (オリジナルキャンドルをつくろう!)

Most children have the experience of drawing with colorful crayons.

Do you know what crayons are made of?

Actually, crayons are made of wax.

We can use them to make a multi-colored candle.

You can make old candles into new, cute candles using these crayons.

I did an experiment to make colorful candles when I was in the 2nd grade of elementary school. It was a fun winter project.

Today I’d like to tell you about it.

newspaper, gloves, crayons, knife

Step 1 Use the knife to shave your favorite color crayon into small slices.

Step 2 Put the crayon slices and old candles into the metal mug.

Step 3 Heat the metal mug using the hot plate until the crayons are melted.

Use medium heat and be careful of the temperature of the hot plate!

Step 4 Put the wick in the candle mold.

Step 5 Pour about 1cm of the heated candle wax into the candle mold. Let it cool.

Step 6 Repeat Steps 1 to 5 with different color.

Step 7 After completion, remove the candle from the mold.

I was so happy to make candles in my favorite colors.

Dyeing a Handkerchief ( ハンカチを染める)

Colorful flowers make us happy. Do you know why flowers have many colors?

Plants use their petals with flamboyant colors to attract insects and pollinate.

Long ago, people used these flowers for dyeing cloth or thread.

I conducted an experiment of dyeing a handkerchief with onion.

Let me explain about that.

Preparation:

4 or 5 outside layers of an onion, a beaker, alum, a bowl, and a white cotton handkerchief.

Method:

Put 400ml of water and 2g of onion in a beaker.

Boil it until it caramelizes, about 10 minutes.

When the water becomes brown, turn off the heat.

Separate the onion from the water.

Mix 5g of alum and 500ml of hot water in a bowl.

Rinse the cotton handkerchief and squeeze out the water.

Soak the handkerchief in the onion water for about 15 minutes.

Check the color and remove when appropriate.

After dyeing it, rinse the handkerchief.

Next, soak handkerchief in alum water for about 15 minutes.

After dyeing it, rinse the handkerchief.

     Hang the handkerchief to dry.

Alum contains aluminum ions which change and set the color to a warm brown.

It was interesting to learn the process of using an onion and alum in dyeing a handkerchief.

An Experiment Using Flour

Today I will share my experience using flour.

This is story from when I was in the 2nd grade.

let’s take out protein and starch from the flour.

Step1 We mix flour and water and then knead it well.

Step2 Then, we wrap the mixture in bleached cloth and put it in a bowl.

  We knead it again .

Step3 After kneading the mixture we separate the water and the mixture.

We perform two experiments, one on the mixture and the other on the water.

For the first experiment, we use Nihydrin aqueous solution and test tube to investigate whether there is protein in the mixture.

Step4 The next step is to put the mixture into the test tube.

Step5 Then we add about 5ml of water , Nihydrin aqueous solution and boiling stone.

We heat it with the Bunsen burner and check the color.

We use boiling stone to prevent the water from boiling over.

If the results show that color changes to blue-purple we can prove proteins are present.

Next, second experiment uses the water and iodine solution.

Step 6 Mixing iodine solution and the water, and check the color.

If the results show that color changes to blue-purple

we can prove starch are present.

The result of these experiments show that flour contains protein and starch that give us energy and make our blood and muscles.
